Steps have been initiated to issue free pattas to 41,482 residents in Thoothukudi region, said Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan here on Sunday.
Speaking at a function organised for issuing free pattas to 131 beneficiaries in Thoothukudi, the Minister said that a special camp was organised on February 7 to facilitate patta application for the residents of Thoothukudi Municipal Corporation. Over 3,500 applications were received and after scrutiny, the first phase of distribution was completed on March 12, with 151 beneficiaries receiving computerised pattas.
The pattas issued during the tenure of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has not been recorded in official documents and efforts are being made to issue computerised pattas to those beneficiaries as well.

In Thoothukudi corporation and surrounding areas, there are about 11,739 individuals whose pattas lack proper ownership details, for 5,949 individuals their land is classified under irrigational and dry land, 22,600 individuals reside on urban poramboke lands and 1,100 individual live on natham category lands, making a total of 41,482 individuals without proper pattas. A systematic scrutiny is being taken to issue pattas to all these individuals, she added.
